Pride is Protest
Engin Beri photographed his first Pride march in 1996, at twenty, on a film camera his brother had given him years earlier. He didn't photograph Pride again for fifteen years. Pride is Protest is the work that followed: a record of NYC Pride from 2011 to 2024, made not as a spectator but from inside his own community.
Pride began as a riot and became a parade, and this work holds both. Each image uses selective color to pull vivid queer color from desaturated, newsprint-gray backgrounds, a visual argument that every flag flying today was paid for by someone. It is a record of what visibility costs, and a celebration of the people who paid for it.
The debut solo exhibition of this St. Petersburg local is on view now at Eat Art Love through July 31. This is Pride Month, and June 13 is a night to celebrate it together. Join Engin in person:
